About

Suncor Energy Inc., an integrated energy powerhouse founded in 1917 and headquartered in Calgary, Canada, was formerly known as Suncor Inc. until its name change in April 1997. The company primarily concentrates on the extensive development of petroleum resources within Canada's Athabasca oil sands. Its operations span the full spectrum of the crude oil industry globally, encompassing exploration, acquisition, development, production, transportation, refining, and marketing. Suncor also distributes petroleum and petrochemical products, primarily in Canada, under the recognizable Petro-Canada brand. The enterprise is structured into several key operating divisions: Oil Sands; Exploration and Production; Refining and Marketing; and Corporate and Eliminations. The Oil Sands division is dedicated to extracting bitumen using both mining and in-situ methods, subsequently upgrading it into refinery feedstock and diesel, or blending it with diluent for direct market sale. Its Exploration and Production segment manages offshore ventures in regions such as Canada's east coast and the North Sea, alongside overseeing onshore assets in Libya and Syria. The Refining and Marketing segment transforms crude oil and intermediate inputs into a diverse array of petroleum and petrochemical products, which it then markets to a broad customer base including retail, commercial, and industrial clients through its sales network. The Corporate and Eliminations segment notably includes the operation of four wind farms situated across Ontario and Western Canada. Furthermore, Suncor actively engages in the marketing and trading of crude oil, natural gas, various byproducts, refined products, and power.

FAQs

Can Indian residents buy Suncor Energy stock?

Yes. Suncor Energy (SU) has been listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange since 1995, in the Oil & Gas Integrated industry, and Indian residents can buy it through Paasa. You fund the account from your Indian bank under the RBI's Liberalised Remittance Scheme and the money is converted to US dollars and then to CAD. Shares are held in your own name at Interactive Brokers, segregated from Paasa's own assets.

How much does one Suncor Energy share cost in rupees?

One Suncor Energy share is CA$96.50 — about ₹6,524 at a CAD/INR rate of 67.61 on 30 Sep 2026. Both the Suncor Energy price and the rupee rate move during the day, so the rupee cost changes with them.

What are the LRS and TCS rules for buying Suncor Energy from India?

Remit up to $250,000 per financial year under the RBI's Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS). Banks collect 20% tax at source on LRS remittances above ₹10 lakh in a financial year; the TCS is adjustable against your income-tax liability. FX and the LRS declaration are handled by your bank when you fund your account.

How are gains on Suncor Energy shares taxed in India?

Gains on shares held for more than 24 months are long-term and taxed at 12.5%. Gains on shares held for 24 months or less are short-term and taxed at your income-tax slab rate. The gain is computed in rupees using the CAD/INR rate on the purchase and the sale date, so the rupee move counts alongside the Suncor Energy price. Paasa issues a capital-gains statement for your return.

Does Suncor Energy pay a dividend, and how is it taxed in India?

Yes. Suncor Energy pays a dividend and the current yield is 2.49%; the last declared dividend was CA$2.40 per share, about ₹162.25. Dividends are taxed at your slab rate in India. Paasa's dividend report lists the gross dividend and any tax withheld for each payment.

When can I trade Suncor Energy from India?

The Toronto Stock Exchange trades 7:00 pm – 1:30 am IST in Indian time, so the close lands after midnight. The window shifts to 8:00 pm – 2:30 am IST when Canada is on standard time. Orders can only execute during that window.

Do I have to declare Suncor Energy shares in my Indian tax return?

Yes. Foreign shares held on 31 March must be reported in Schedule FA of your Indian income-tax return. Paasa gives you a Schedule FA-ready statement listing your Suncor Energy holding, its cost and its closing value.

How do I sell Suncor Energy and bring the money back to India?

You sell during market hours (7:00 pm – 1:30 am IST) and the proceeds settle in CAD in your Paasa account. From there you can hold the balance, reinvest, or repatriate. Funds can be withdrawn in any currency to any bank account in your own name. Whether the sale is short- or long-term is decided by the 24-month holding period.

Does the rupee rate affect what I make on Suncor Energy?

Yes. Suncor Energy is priced in CAD, so your rupee outcome combines the CAD move with the CAD/INR move between the day you remit and the day you convert back. Both directions are reflected in the capital-gains statement Paasa issues.
