About

This iShares Exchange Traded Fund (ETF), managed by BlackRock, is designed to mirror as closely as possible the investment results of the MSCI EMU 100% hedged to CHF Index. The fund achieves this by directly holding the underlying securities that comprise the index. A significant feature is its integrated monthly currency hedging mechanism, which utilizes one-month foreign exchange forward contracts. This strategy aims to diminish the effect of exchange rate movements between the fund's primary currency, the Swiss Franc, and the Euro, the currency of the index's constituent assets. The target index itself provides exposure to stocks from countries within Europe's Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) that satisfy MSCI's specific criteria for size, liquidity, and free float. As with all iShares ETFs, it represents a clear, economical, and liquid investment option, trading on stock exchanges akin to conventional stocks, thereby providing straightforward access to diverse global markets and asset categories.

How big is EMUC, and what does it cost to hold?

iShares MSCI EMU UCITS ETF manages about CHF 181.8M. Its expense ratio is 0.38% a year, deducted inside the fund. It launched in 2015.

Is EMUC a UCITS ETF?

Yes. iShares MSCI EMU UCITS ETF is a UCITS fund domiciled in Ireland, set up under the European Union's UCITS rules for funds sold across Europe. It is listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange and trades in CHF.

What are EMUC's largest holdings?

Is EMUC subject to US estate tax?

No. Because EMUC is domiciled in Ireland rather than the US, it is not a US-situs asset, so US estate tax does not apply to it. US-listed ETFs held directly can be taxed at up to 40% above $60,000 when they pass to your family.

Is EMUC accumulating or distributing?

Accumulating. Dividends from its holdings are reinvested inside the fund, so nothing is paid out to you and there is no dividend to declare in India.

How are US dividends taxed inside EMUC?

The US withholds 15% on dividends from the US shares the fund holds, and that tax is paid inside the fund. You cannot claim it as a Foreign Tax Credit in India.

How are gains on EMUC taxed in India?

Units held for more than 24 months are long-term and taxed at 12.5% without indexation; units held for 24 months or less are taxed at your income-tax slab rate. The gain is worked out in rupees, so the currency move counts.

How has EMUC performed?

EMUC's price is up 15.8% over the past year and up 48.7% over five years. These figures are price change only and exclude dividends; past performance does not guarantee future returns.

How is EMUC different from a US-listed ETF?

EMUC is domiciled in Ireland rather than the US. That keeps it outside US estate tax, and dividend withholding on its US shares is 15%, paid inside the fund, instead of the 25% withheld on a US-listed ETF. The 25% can generally be claimed as a credit in India; the 15% cannot. Capital gains on both are taxed the same way in India.
